St. Mark Mission Statement |
As early as the year 2000 Monsignor Glenn "Duffy" Gardner and the parish leadership started to look at the needs of the Church facility. After reviewing several options it was decided that a new Church building was cost prohibitive.
Currently St. Mark is facing several issues with the Church building that currently need to be addressed:
* The material of the roof makes it very difficult to cool the Church in the summer months.
* The lighting in the Church is also detrimental to cooling the Church as well as not being energy efficient. The improvements to the roof and lighting are important to our stewardship of the environment as we continue to live stewardship as a way of life.
* In looking for opportunities to make the entrance to the Church more visible and welcoming from the street as well as providing a more definite Church identity, we also saw an opportunity to increase the size of the restrooms. The restrooms in the Church are not sufficient to handle the current Mass attendance. In the past year our weekend Mass attendance has increased from 5000 to over 6000. This repositioning of the Narthex will allow for the addition of a larger and more appropriate bride's room for the many weddings we have at St. Mark.
* As we continue to grow not only in Sunday attendance numbers but also in our ministries and organizations we need to make plans for more adequate meeting spaces and parking.

Recommendations are to have the immediate needs met by having the Church remodeled in Phase I.
This would include:
* Replace the roofing and lighting in the Church.
* Reposition the Narthex of the Church to face Alma which would allow for a larger gathering area outside the Church for community sharing opportunities; as our Mission Statement directs us. This will accommodate the new and larger restrooms and bride's room.
* Add a sprinkler system to the Church for fire protection, which is required by the city building code for any remodel of an existing building without a sprinkler system.
* Add a large cross which will allow for easy identity as a Church.
After the completion of Phase I, we would consider beginning development for Phase II, which could include:
* Clearing the remaining Brentwood properties for additional parking; which is necessary to help eliminate parishioners from parking across Alma and to provide a better school dismissal procedure than having parents line up on Alma. Additional landscaping and relocation of the driveway near the Child Development Center and creating a walkway through the Smyth Pastoral Center will provide additional safety.

* The feasibility study could highlight other needs which have not been perceived.
This project will require a parish-wide capital stewardship campaign to complete. The estimated price for the improvements in Phase I is $2.0 million. An additional $5.5 million is estimated for Phase II. Our goal in the current campaign is to raise enough to complete Phase I and begin work on Phase II. It may be necessary to have another campaign in 3 to 4 years for completion of Phase II.

Since St. Mark has never had a capital campaign, we are engaging in a feasibility study to determine acceptance of the proposed projects, the campaign goal, and the plan for implementation of the capital stewardship program.
We are directed by our Mission Statement to envision St. Mark as a community called to worship together, to serve one another, to grow in faith, and to further the presence of God in the world. We believe these improvements will further that direction. We must view the needs of our parish as a chance for us to respond to God's blessings.
