The Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Mark

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church “It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:

  • it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, ‘Abba! Father’;
  • it unites us more firmly to Christ;
  • it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
  • it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
  • it gives us special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never be ashamed of the cross. (CCC 1302-1303).

Our Confirmation program is a two-year program where we equip the parents to be able to fulfill their role as teachers of their children. We know that parents have the biggest impact on the lives of their children, and this duty to raise up their children in the faith is not a duty that can be abrogated or delegated, but rather is the ultimate end of the marriage. As Pope Pius XI wrote in the 13th paragraph of Casti Connubii “Christian parents must also understand that they are destined not only to propagate and preserve the human race on earth, indeed not only to educate any kind of worshippers of the true God, but children who are to become members of the Church of Christ, to raise up fellow-citizens of the Saints, and members of God’s household, that the worshippers of God and Our Savior may daily increase”. The first command of God in Genesis is to “be fruitful and multiply (Gen 1:28)” not only that the population would increase, but more fundamentally that we would raise more worshippers of the one true God. We want to be able to help parents to live out this mission.

Confirmation Classes

This year we will have a Catechetical night once a month led by the priest to teach the parents the fullness of the truth, and will be meeting once a month with your catechist on a Wednesday night from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM parents must attend this class with the students. The Parents will be responsible for teaching their children the curriculum, Bible Basics for Catholics that has 8 Lessons, one for each month. The families will pray together the list of required prayers and have them memorized. Last but not least, the families will be reminded of their obligations as Catholics to follow these precepts of the Church.

As we walk through this process of Family Catechesis, we will have an assigned catechist who will be there to help your family. They will answer any questions you have about the program and help make sure that you are staying on track. When the student feels that they have been adequately prepared for confirmation, we will hold another interview to make sure that the confirmand has been adequately prepared and that the families have been following the prescription.
