Introduction to our Faith Formation Program
The Christian family is ordinarily the first experience of the Christian community and the primary environment for growth in faith; it is the “church of the home”. In his 1994 Letter to Families, Pope John Paul II wrote: “Parents are the first and most important educators of their own children, and they also possess a fundamental competence in this area: they are educators because they are parents.” It is through the living witness of parents that children first experience the faith; faith-filled moments permeate all of family life. This experience is irreplaceable and lasts throughout life.
As parents, you teach your children through your example every day. You teach them to walk, talk, tie their shoes, and say their prayers. As parents you are blessed with the love and grace to foster your children’s spiritual growth and it is in the family that children learn to love and serve God. Indeed, as parents you are uniquely able to teach your children – first because you yourselves are persons of faith and second because you are parents. It is this religious formation that is the foundation of all other forms of religious education a person receives.
Building upon the Second Vatican Council’s teaching that the family is the domestic church, our program offers parents a primary role in their children’s faith formation while providing them with teaching materials, lesson plans, and helpful tips. Our program typically runs from September to May and each month consists of two parts:
- Monthly Gatherings: Once a month parents will gather for adult catechesis on a topic of our Catholic faith based on either The Creed/Profession of Faith, Sacraments, Life in Christ, and Christian Prayer (4 yr. cycle); these gathering will be taught by one of our priests.
- Home Lessons: Parents, equipped with materials and an understanding of the monthly lessons, teach their children the Catholic faith at home.
This model will help parents/guardians respond to the Church’s call to be “the first and foremost educators of their children.” Our purpose is to aid families as they grow in their love and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. Parents will continue to be actively involved in the sacramental preparation of their children for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion and additional materials for preparation will be provided.
The candidates enrolled into the Faith Formation Program at St. Mark must:
- be in grades Pre-K4 through 6th for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year and
- have received the Sacrament of Baptism
IMPORTANT: In order to receive sacramental preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion, the child must be at least in the 2nd grade for the school year of 2021-2022 AND must have completed least one other year in the Faith Formation Program to be eligible. If you are unsure if your children qualify for Sacramental Preparation this year, please call our Parish Office.
For those receiving Sacramental Preparation:
If the child has received the sacrament of Baptism at another catholic parish, you are required to provide a copy of their sacramental certificate. You can drop off the copy of the certificate at our Parish Office during our business hours or you can scan and email it to our Faith Formation Program Coordinator, Peggy Theis at firstname.lastname@example.org
If the child received the Sacrament of Baptism at St. Mark, you are not required to provide a certificate as we will have it in our records; please be sure to let us know.
